The Homemade Cafe

Amidst the concrete and chaos of Oshiwara, Andheri lies a cute little cafe which belongs in a fairy tale.
The green glass door, the red flowers on the awning and the pretty little lights draw you in. Upon entering The Homemade Cafe you are engulfed by the coziness of the place; it is small yet doesn’t seem cramped, with high ceilings,  lovely artwork on the walls, photographs and books; making you feel as if you’ve walked into someone’s living room.

Coming straight from work, my friend and I were ravenous. And without much ado we proceeded to order.

To offset all the calories we were going to consume during this meal, we thought we should start with a salad. The Grilled Panzanella (Rs.249) was slightly warm as it should be, and consisted of croutons, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions zucchini, and lettuce with a tangy vinaigrette. It was literally summer on a plate, with fresh, crunchy veggies coated with right amount of that delicious dressing.

We also called for Herbed Potato Veggies (Rs.125) , which were the usual potato wedges, sprinkled with red chili powder and served with mayonnaise. This dish made a decent side order.

For drinks, my friend opted for a Lemon Iced Tea (Rs.120). The zestiness of the lemon and the aroma of a fresh brew was a heady combination. I chose the Cold Coffee (Rs.149). I would call for this again only for that hint of vanilla, dash of chocolate syrup, and the adorable glass it is served in.

We ordered two mains. The Jamaican Jerk Cottage Cheese Wrap (Rs.249), which contained marinated paneer, caramelized onion and rocket leaves. Mayonnaise, a fresh salad, and potato fritters were served on the side. The marinade was so fiery hot that it overpowered all the other flavours which was quite unfortunate, since the dish looked extremely appetizing.

The Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli (Rs.299) is made in a porcini and butter sauce, however they were happy to accommodate my request of serving it in a pink sauce. The dish garnished with pine nuts and fresh parsley was served with well toasted pieces of garlic bread. The sauce was finger-licking good, rich and creamy; and a perfect pair to the melt in the mouth ravioli. This, for me, was the dish of the day!

For the dessert we ordered The Nutella Cookie Cup (Rs.149) and it was a clear winner – a warm, chewy cup-shaped cookie with a dollop of Nutella in it. Just like you can never go wrong with Nutella, you will never go wrong with this dessert.

With a homely feel, and a warm courteous staff, The Homemade Cafe lives up to its name. It is apparent, that a lot of thought has been put into designing the space and the menu. I would love to come back again, so I can cozy up in the corner with a book and some coffee and just forget about the world for a few hours.
